Matty Is Getting Paid The Money He Deserves
Detroit Lions starting quarterback Matthew Stafford is now the highest paid player in NFL history as he has agreed to a new contract. Stafford will being paid $135 million in the next five years and will make an average of $27 million each year.
The Lions thought it would be a good idea to pay their starting quarterback now then later. I don't have a problem that he is the highest paid quarterback in the NFL because he has shown fans that he can stay healthy and make plays. I would rather see some other players in the NFL be paid higher than Stafford is but at least the highest paid player is someone who can play and is clutch like Stafford. Besides he is entering his prime so the best of Matthew Stafford is yet to come.
For the past six seasons Matthew has started every game with Lions and has gotten the Lions to the playoffs three times out of the last six seasons which is really good for the Lions franchise. In the each of the last six seasons Matthew has thrown for over 4,200 yards and has thrown at least 20 touchdowns. A lot of people give Matthew Stafford a hard time because he plays for the Lions and the Lions and have never won a Super Bowl.
Throughout the beginning of Stafford's career he always had Calvin Johnson by his side and making all the impossible catches but when Calvin retired in 2016 everybody thought that Detroit was screwed and they would do worst than they even did before. But what Stafford proved to Detroit that is that he doesn't need Calvin Johnson to get the Lions to the playoffs as he did last season when he got to the Lions playoffs with a 9-7 record and almost the Packers in Week 17 of the regular season to win the NFC North. As long as Stafford has wide receivers thahh have the ability to catch the football he is always going to make plays.
The Lions defense obviously still needs to play better and I feel if someone on that defense can become more of a leader like Defensive End Ezekiel Ansah or Middle Linebacker Nick Bellore this defense can be at least in the Top 15 in the league. The Lions picking up CB DJ Hayden this offseason during Free Agency. I have seen the way DJ has played in Oakland and I think his way of playing man to man coverage is exceptional and he is going to make a difference in Detroit. When Oakland Raiders Cornerback Charles Woodson retired in 2015 Hayden stepped up and filled in Woodson's shoes last season as he was one of the best defensive players for the Raiders.
The reason that Detroit has not become an elite team over the past decade is cause of the defense and that is not at all Matthew Stafford's fault. Throughout the years Stafford has learned to throw the ball higher and farther. Also the way Stafford throws bullet passes is so beautiful. I honestly believe if Detroit went to the playoffs more often that Matthew Stafford would've made to more Pro Bowls and even win an MVP award, specifically in 2011 when he threw 41 touchdowns. Matthew Stafford is getting paid the money he deserves and he finds ways to make plays no matter who the running back or wide receiver is.
