Them Young Fellas
The last time the Boys Varsity Basketball Team won a WPIAL Championship was not that long ago when they defeated North Allegheny 78-67 in WPIAL Class AAAA on February 28th 2015. Once again the goal this year for the Colts is to win a WPIAL Championship once again and perhaps win a state championship. The Colts happened to have lost a good amount of players this offseason like Ross Wilkerson, Tristen Zimmer, Coleman Vaughn, Kaleb Krebs and others. This is the first time in Coach Tim McConnell’s 25 year tender at Chartiers Valley in which he coached a team with no seniors at all. They are currently 2-1 and face Montour at home tonight. The Colts are young but they have some players that can make a big impact and will soon be talked about a lot around the WPIAL. A lot of kids who know Junior Shooting Guard Joe Pipilo knew that the kid had some good talent when it comes to playing basketball and once he starts playing a whole lot more that he would light the court up. Pipilo has definitely lighted the court up so far as he has averaged 26.3 points in the first three games. Junior Tyler Shaw and Sophomore Sean Banas have also been playing well so far this season as Tyler has averaged 10.7 points so far this season and Sean has averaged 16.7 points per game. The Colts also have other players that help make big plays like Connor Barrett, Griffin Beattie and Jared Goldstrom. These guys can rebound, block and make assists at a high level. The Colts will have to battle hard if they want to achieve their goal as they have to face some tough teams in 5A such as Mars, Moon (who won the WPIAL 5A championship last years) and Knoch. A lot of other schools are not talking about Chartiers Valley right now but they have the capability to make some noise and all the other schools will see how hard Chartiers Valley will battle to win. Even if the Colts cannot achieve their goal this year the team will still be the same next year unless some players decide to quit next year or if some players decide to join. We all know however is that this team can compete at a high level for years to come as the Colts are trying to get another WPIAL championship trophy and put it in the sports case in front of the high school gymnasium.
