2017-18 CVSHL Midseason Report

Well we’re just about at that midway point in this CVSHL season and there has not been enough games that have been played this season. During this time last season the CVSHL was at that point in the season when the games were becoming so important before playoff time. The CVSHL was becoming to be so hype at this time last season that all the people were talking about around Chartiers Valley was the CVSHL. A lot of the players in the league right now wonder if the league will actually continue or if it’s going to be a repeat of last year when there was no champion crowned at all due to the Birdland Whalers and the Collier Cargo Shorts not able to schedule at least one game in the Championship series.

So it’ll take time later on in the year to see if any of the games we’ll be played again. There has been talk between the Whalers scheduling a game with the Shorts or Rockets soon in January so that is good news there. The last game that was played was on December 10th 2017 when the Oak Trees played the Collier Cargo Shorts at Nike Site.

The Oak Trees, however, are currently on top of the standings as they are the number one seed with a 3-1 record. The Trees have not been the same loud forest that they were last year but they recruited more talented players this offseason and they have been producing. Trees Goalie Gus Deely currently leads the league in wins with 3. Trees Rookie Timothy McMaster, brother of former Oak Tree Bobby McMaster, is tied with Whalers Trevor Colberg with goals scored. They both have 12 at the moment. Three of the top 5 goals scorers in the league come from the Trees with Timmy, Jimmy Boyle and Hunter Waldern. The Trees do really well at Meadowlark Park where their record is 3-0. The Trees lost their only game against the Collier Cargo Shorts at The Deck Hockey Rink at Nike Site. So people start to wonder if the Trees should just play their games at Meadowlark Park where they have won all their game so far. Also, remember that the Trees did beat the Shorts twice in the Preseason where both of those games were played at Meadowlark Park.

The Collier Cargo Shorts right now are 2-1 and are in the second seed in the CVSHL standings. The Cargo Shorts are looking real nice as CV Varsity Ice Hockey Players Matt Storar, Trevor Stevenson and Luke Thompson joined the Shorts this past December. Their roster seems to be more loaded than it was last year as CV Ice Hockey Players Chris Vaughn, Cam Stevenson, Adam Weiss and Danny Phillips are on the team as well. Out of all three games the Shorts have played this season Cargo Shorts Captain Pat McGough has scored at least a goal in all three games something no other player on the team has done yet this season. So the Shorts know that they know Pat has the capability to score goals each and every game. A lot of the players on the other teams wonder if Cargo Shorts players Frank Peluso, Alex Struna and William Sherman will come back and play again this season as all three have not played a game for the Shorts yet.

The Birdland Whalers and the Carnegie Cyclones both have records of 1-1. The Carnegie Cyclones and the Collier Cargo Shorts have tried to schedule a game with each other this season and that has not worked out since this season. From multiple sources The Cyclones and the Shorts have had heated conversations involving try to find a single day to play against each other since the Cyclones is the only team the Shorts have not played yet this season. The Cyclones are still waiting for their superstar Tyler Coleman to play a game this season as he has missed some games due to vacationing in Florida. The Birdland Whalers are still waiting for defenseman Danny O’Neill to play a game this season as he had to miss some games due to soccer and work. The Whalers are lucky to have Captain Trevor Colberg on the team has he has scored 12 goals this season and the Whalers will have him for this season and the next two seasons after that.

The Rennerdale Rockets are the only team without a win this season and that is due to a lack of solid defense. The Rockets are looking like the Bridgeville Bobcats as they didn’t win a game until their seventh game of the season last year. Some of the players have a gut feeling the Rockets will have at least one win this season as Michael Sedlak leads the team in goals with 9.
