Weather Is Affecting WPIAL Spring Sports
The weather in Allegheny County this spring has been crazy. It's April 5th and it is still snowing outside as I am looking at the window while I am typing this article at the same time. A lot of WPIAL baseball, softball and tennis games have been cancelled recently because of the weather. If the weather does not get better soon all the outside WPIAL sports might only play section games and not even worry about scheduling or making up the non section games.
Last year in the middle of March I already started cutting the grass but now it's April and I have not been thinking about going outside and cutting the grass. Not only has there been a lot of precipitation this spring but it's still really cold out. Also last year in the middle of March I started consistently wearing shorts everyday cause it was just plain out warm outside.
A lot of students have been practicing the spring sports they play more than actually playing games and the students have been upset over it. Their is nothing anybody can do except Mother Nature.
The Chartiers Valley Boys baseball team has played a total of 2 games since the start of the regular season which began on March 24th and they were scheduled to play six during that time. The Colts during that time played against Montour and Peters Township and the Colts beat Montour but lost Peters Township. The Colts record in the section is 1-0 because Montour is in their section and not Peters Township. The Colts had their games cancelled against Steel Valley, Seneca Valley, Central Catholic and Hampton. The Colts were scheduled to play Hampton today which would've been their first road game of the regular season.
But it's not just the rain and snow that is impacting WPIAL competition but it lightning is making an impact as well. On April 3rd the Chartiers Valley Lady Colts lacrosse team was scheduled to play Seton-LaSalle at Chartiers Valley High School but the game got cancelled because lightning was in sight and a lot of WPIAL lacrosse games throughout the area probably got cancelled if the games started near 7 because that's when the lightning started around.
As I talk to other students at CV that play spring sports you would believe how much they want the Sun to come and all the precipitation to go away. If the bad weather keeps apperaing throughout April and May all these WPIAL games will be pushed back and their could be a chance all the WPIAL championship dates might be pushed back as well. Hopefully Mother Nature decides to make good weather appear in Western Pennsylvania or their will be a lot of angry athletes.
