Mateo is currently a high school senior at West Allegheny and is known as a star football player for the team. Tonight, he made his college decision as he decided to attend The University of Delaware to continue his academic and football career. A lot of WPIAL athletes have congratulated Mateo on his decision on Twitter such as Cody Ross (Freedom), Grace Faulk (West Allegheny), Sean Martin (Upper St. Clair) and others.

Mateo had won a WPIAL football championship with West Allegheny in 2016 when was a sophomore. This season, Mateo and the rest of his teammates could have won a WPIAL championship; but, they lost to the WPIAL 5A Football championship game to Penn Hills by a score of 28-18. Yeah, Mateo could have been known as a 2x WPIAL champion.

As a wide receiver and tight end, Mateo recorded 28 receptions for 355 yards during the 2018 WPIAL football season. This season, he scored a total of 6 touchdowns and got a lot of attention due to the way he plays at the defensive end position.

Besides The University of Delaware, Mateo also received offers from The University of Dayton, Bucknell University, The University of Maine, Georgetown University, Robert Morris University and other colleges. In his four years at West Allegheny, he has recorded a total of 1,338 yards as a wide receiver and tight end.

2018 South Fayette graduate Noah Plack and 2018 Steel Valley graduate Amonte' Strothers both play football at The University of Delaware. They both just finished their freshman year of college football there. So, you could guess that The University of Delaware knows how to recruit good athletes from the WPIAL as they recruited Plack and Strothers and now they recruited Vandamia. If you have watched WPIAL football for a good period of time, you know how popular and good that Plack, Strothers and Vandamia were at their respected high schools.

Mateo made a decision at a time where West Allegheny football is going to undergo a major transition now as Bob Palko just finished his final year of coaching WPIAL football at West Allegheny. Next season, Kim Niedbala will coach the West Allegheny football team. Mateo had a good high school football career and we can only wish him luck as he will play football at the FCS Division 1 level.
