Mostly everybody who has played a sport in their life knows that in order to get better at the sport that you play in that you have to keep working hard and know that you are not going to be a superstar right away.
The 2018-19 Deer Lakes Boys basketball team has being eating so far. They are currently in first place in the WPIAL Class 3A Section 3 with a 7-0 section record and a 10-4 overall record. Deer Lakes most recent win was against South Allegheny on Friday by a score of 57-48.
This team has a lot more experience under this belt this year than they did least year. Deer Lakes was in 4A for Boys basketball last year and this year the WPIAL decided that Deer Lakes was qualified to compete in 3A. It would be hard to say that Deer Lakes is not enjoying 3A. The team's section record from last season was 7-5. Their section already to begin this season is 7-0 as I said earlier. The team's overall record from last season was 12-10. Their overall record, so far this season, is 10-4 as they have 7 more regular season games to play.
Deer Lakes has had a lot of different opponents this season as this season, the only other team in their section that was in their section from last season was Valley. All the other teams that are in Deer Lakes section were not in their section from last season.
What's nice about this 18-19 Deer Lakes Boys basketball team is that it's not just one person on the team that is the superstar and scoring 35 points per game. Everybody on the team is contributing and it's a big reason why they have started out so hot. Look at their game against South Allegheny on Friday. Three players on Deer Lakes scored exactly 16 points as Jack Hollibaugh (Junior), Brad Perrotte (Senior) and Jared Colton (Senior) were able to do that. If you are a high school basketball coach and see three players on your team all contributing and scoring points at the same level and pace then you have to be pretty happy with what you are seeing. The nice thing about these three guys is that they produce and stay consistent during each game they play.
People have been talking a lot of good things about other WPIAL basketball teams in 3A like McGuffey, Seton LaSalle, North Catholic, Lincoln Park and Aliquippa; but, Deer Lakes should be getting more attention. This Deer Lakes team is ready and are experienced enough to go deep in the postseason and try to win a WPIAL championship in March. All Deer Lakes has to do is "Trust the Process" and they will be fine.
The next game for Deer Lakes will be on Tuesday against East Allegheny on the road at 7:30 PM ET. It's another section game for both teams.
