Thomas Jefferson Jaguars quarterback, Shane Stump, will try to win one more WPIAL football championship before he graduates high school next year. Stump won 2 WPIAL football championships in his freshman and sophomore year, but didn’t win one his junior year.
If you really think about it, the only mistake Stump has made in his football career is when he threw an interception late in the fourth quarter in the WPIAL 4A football championship against South Fayette back in November 2018. South Fayette’s defensive back, Mike Trimbur, was the player who picked off Stump with 56 seconds left to go in the game. That interception happened in the redzone at the 7 yard line.
This past season, Stump threw for 1,833 yards and 24 touchdowns. In Stump’s sophomore season (2017), he threw for 1,621 yards and 24 touchdowns. When Stump was a freshman at Thomas Jefferson in 2016, he was not the starting quarterback for the team as he was the backup to former Jaguars quarterback, Bobby Kelley. Kelley threw for 1,735 yards and 34 touchdowns in Stump’s freshman year. Stump must have learned a lot from Kelley because Stump has been playing good football since Kelley graduated in 2017.
Stump will have to play football against the same section teams that he had to play against last season. In the regular season last year, Thomas Jefferson defeated West Mifflin 37-6. The Jaguars will have to play the West Mifflin Titans again next year and the Titans lost Matthew Schuster, Parrish Parker, Bryant Johnson, Cody Twigg and other seniors. The Jaguars will also play Belle Vernon again next year, but this time without star running back Mason Pascoe who just graduated from Belle Vernon earlier this month. Indiana Area and Trinity will play Thomas Jefferson again next year. Perhaps both Indiana Area and Trinity will give Thomas Jefferson more of a fight next season. Both Indiana and Trinity were young teams last year and maybe they can play better against Thomas Jefferson next year with more experience under their belt.
Even though the Jaguars will lose their start running back next year in Max Shaw, they will still have their star wide receiver in Daniel Deabner who lead the team in receptions (59) and receiving yards (1,365) last season. So, expect Stump to keep throwing the ball to a lot to Deabner next season.
With the return of veteran players such as Stump and Deabner, Thomas Jefferson will still be considered favorites to win the WPIAL football championship in Class 4A next year even though they did not win it last year.
Thomas Jefferson’s veteran head football coach, Bill Cherpak, has to feel a little angry that his team didn’t win 4 straight WPIAL football championships. So, expect the Jaguars to even play better next season.
Shane Stump is one of the most talked about WPIAL quarterbacks and we cannot wait to see what he’ll do in his senior season next year.
