2019 Week 1 WPIAL Football Summary


McKessport's, Devari Robinson, rushed for 5 touchdowns and threw 1 passing touchdown against Connellsville in Week 1 of the 2019 WPIAL football season.

If you were busy and doing something on Friday August 30th, 2019 and Saturday August 31st, 2019 that made you miss all the WPIAL football news in Week 1, I got you covered. Here is some key information that you should know from Week 1 of the 2019 WPIAL football season.

6A: Pine Richland's Cole Spencer, threw 5 touchdowns in a 41-13 win against Hempfield. All 5 of his passing touchdowns were in the first half. Pine-Richland made this win look easy.

North Allegheny beating Norwin by a score of 42-0 is what they needed to boost their confidence.

Mt. Lebanon defeated Canon-McMillan by a score of 49-21 on the road. The Blue Devils were able to score 3 touchdowns in both the 2nd and 4th quarter while the Big Macs scored a total of 3 touchdowns in the whole entire game. Blake Joseph did have a total of 11 receptions in this game for Canon-McMillan.

Central Catholic quarterback, senior Dom Pieto, rushed for a 2-yard touchdown, late in the 4th quarter, to beat Seneca Valley on the road by a score of 10-7.

5A: Peters beating Upper St. Clair had another good battle as Peters pulled away with the 29-21 win. Upper St. Clair quarterback, Ethan Dahlem, threw for 284 yards in the loss. He was my "WPIAL Football Player of the Week" in Week 0.

West Allegheny running back, Nico Flati, rushed for a 37-yard touchdown run with less than 1:30 left in the fourth quarter to beat Chartiers Valley at home by a score of 35-31. Flati rushed for a total of 4 touchdowns in the game. The fact that Chartiers Valley gave West Allegheny a game was surprising.

Bethel Park's Jack Evans rushed for 3 touchdowns and rushed for a 2-point conversion in a 29-16 road win against Woodland Hills.

McKeesport's Devari Robinson rushed for 5 touchdowns and passed for 1 touchdown in a 52-0 win over Connellsville.

Even though Gateway started off good with a 7-0 lead over Penn-Trafford due to a 66-yard touchdown run by Derrick Davis, Penn-Trafford scored the next four touchdowns in the game to give them a 28-7 win.

Sophomore, Anthony DiFalco, converted all 6 of his extra point attempts to help his Franklin Regional Panthers beat Plum by a score of 42-14.

Late in the fourth quarter in the Fox Chapel and North Hills game, one of Fox Chapel's receivers dropped the ball on the North Hills’ 15 on fourth down. That play helped Fox Chapel lose the game as North Hills survived and won the game by a score of 35-28.

After losing to Pine-Richland by a score of 21-0 in Week 0, Penn Hills won their first section game against Latrobe by a score of 41-14 in Week 1.

It takes more than one player to win a game. Even though Mars has one of the best and highly recruited offensive linemen in Michael Carmody, Mars needed more players to step up to beat Moon. Moon defeated Mars by a score of 36-14. Moon currently has a 2-0 record in 2019 as they have not played a section game yet.

Baldwin is expected to make some noise in 5A. They defeated Butler by a score of 42-21. Baldwin's Angelo Priore rushed for 3 touchdowns in the game.

4A: Thomas Jefferson quarterback, Shane Stump, only need to throw 1 touchdown to beat Ringgold by a score of 48-6. Thomas Jefferson players, Dylan Mallozzi and DeRon Van Bibber, both rushed for 2 touchdowns in the game.

Nahki Johnson's West Mifflin Titans defeated Indiana Area by a score of 44-0. Jaylen Dukes passed for 3 touchdowns for the Titans while J.J. Davis rushed for 3 touchdowns for the Titans.

Greensburg Salem's Trent Patrick scored a rushing touchdown in overtime to give his team a 19-13 win over Trinity on the road.

South Fayette smacked Beaver Area by a score of 55-6. A lot of South Fayette players contributed in helping the team score in this game.

After trailing 21-14 to Montour in the 4th quarter, New Castle's Michael Wells rushed for 2 touchdowns to help his team beat Montour by a score of 28-21. It was a nice comeback win for New Castle.

Blackhawk was losing to Knoch by a score of 21-7 at halftime. Blackhawk's Marques Watson-Trent rushed for two touchdowns in the third quarter to cut the deficit by to 21-20. All Blackhawk's field goal kicker had to was to convert the extra point attempt and the game would be tied at 21. Well, Blackhawk's field goal kicker missed the extra point and they lost 21-20. There was no scoring in the 4th quarter. In conclusion, Watson-Trent rushed for all three of Blackhawk's touchdowns.

Devin Whitlock scored his first touchdown as part of Belle Vernon's football team in Week 1. Last season, in his freshman year, Whitlock played football for Monessen. Belle Vernon easily defeated Ambridge by a score of 57-0.

3A: Yough's Gamal Maraballie scored a total of 3 touchdowns to help his team defeat Uniontown by a score of 25-0.

Derry Area's Justin Huss rushed for 3 touchdowns in a 35-27 win over Freeport.

Deer Lakes started out with a 7-0 lead over Elizabeth Forward; but Elizabeth Forward scored 15 unanswered points to win the game by a score of 15-7.

North Catholic and Aliquippa both won their respected games in Week 1 as both teams scored at least 50 points in their wins.

Central Valley clapped Quaker Valley by a score of 55-0. It has been a long time since Quaker Valley has gotten shut out in a WPIAL football game. I remember back in 2017 when Quaker Valley won both WPIAL and PIAA 3A football championships.

Keystone Oaks shuts out Highlands 31-0 on the road.

2A: Avonworth's Jax Miller rushed for 3 touchdowns in a 47-14 win over Valley.

Apollo-Ridge's Jake Frello scored 4 touchdowns in 1 34-6 win over Summit Academy.

Steel Valley lost a lot of players after the 2018 WPIAL and PIAA season. They lost on the road to East Allegheny in Week 1 by a score of 35-0. East Allegheny's J.D. Binapoli passed for 3 touchdowns in the game.

Southmoreland scored a total of 4 touchdowns in the 1st quarter and scored a total of 4 touchdowns in the 2nd quarter to defeat Frazier by a score of 56-12. Southmoreland's Riley Comforti posted 180 receiving yards in this game. There was no scoring in the second half of this game.

Charleroi's Legend Davis scored his team's only 2 touchdowns; but that wasn't enough to beat Washington High. Charleroi lost to Washington High by a score of 42-14.

Freedom Area, Neshannock, and new Brighton all won their respected games in the double digits.

Jake Lounder and Kyle Conley helped Burgettstown beat Seton LaSalle by a score of 35-8.

Carlynton's Dallas Paolino scored 4 touchdowns in a 42-8 win at home against Fort Cherry.

Brentwood takes care of business in Week 1 as they defeated South Allegheny by a score of 19-7. Brentwood's John Milcic threw a passing touchdown and rushed for the touchdown in the win. Keep your eyes on Milcic as the season progresses.

Shady Side Academy's Tru Styles rushed for 5 touchdowns in a 35-12 win over Brownsville. Yes, Styles scored all of Shady Side Academy's touchdowns.

1A: Cornell defeats Union by a score of 32-6. Cornell is a team that I recommend you should pay attention to in 1A.

Amahd Pack and the rest of the Sto-Rox Vikings smacked

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart by a score of 34-6. Sto-Rox quarterback, Eric Wilson, passed for a total of 368 yards in this game.

Chartiers-Houston, Laurel, and Avella both had shutout wins in their respected games.

West Greene defeated Bentworth by a score of 82-14 in Week 1. That was insane. West Greene scored 76 points in the first half. Ben Jackson scored all 5 of his rushing touchdowns in the first half for West Greene. Kolin Walker also added 3 rushing touchdowns for West Greene in the first half.
