12-27-19 WPIAL Boys Basketball Key Notes

This WPIAL basketball season, Sophomore Michael Wells (left) is looking to help New Castle win a WPIAL basketball championship for a fourth straight year.

New Castle defeated Central Catholic by a score of 63-49. Freshman Isiah Boice scored 23 for the Hurricanes while Sophomore Michael Wells attributed for the Hurricanes with 15 points. Ben Sarson contributed 17 points for Central Catholic. This is the fifth win for the Hurricanes on the year while this is the third loss for the Vikings on the year.

After trailing 27-24 at halftime, North Hills came back to beat Hampton by a score of 63-57. Logan Marshalek scored 26 points for North Hills while Seth Koontz scored 20 points for Hampton. North Hills improves their record to 4-3 on the year while Hampton's record is now 4-4 overall.

Pine-Richland smacked Beaver Falls 76-46. With Andrew Petcash and Dan Petcash graduated from Pine-Richland, there is another Petcash making a name for himself. Junior Joey Petcash scored 15 points for the Rams in the win. Kyle Polce led the Rams in this game as he scored 20 points.

Tommy DiRenzo's Bethel Park Blackhawks defeated Sto-Rox by a score of 97-57. DiRenzo scored 27 points while Ryan Meis attributed 14 points for Bethel Park. Sto-Rox has lost their second straight game while Bethel Park has now won their fourth straight game.

Peters Township defeated South Fayette by a score of 58-44. Colin Cote scored 17 points for Peters Township while Brandon Jakiela scored 14 points for South Fayette. After starting 3-0, South Fayette has lost three of their last four games as their overall record is now 4-3. Peters Township has won four straight games.

Fox Chapel defeated Shady Side Academy by a score of 45-30. The Indians were not able to score in the double digits in each of the four quarters that they played today. It was simply rough for them. Fox Chapel continues to stay hot as they have won their eighth straight game to have an overall record of 8-0. The Foxes are making headlines as the season is progressing.

Logan Summerhill continues to score for Franklin Regional as he scored 21 points in a 56-48 loss against Penn-Trafford. The Panthers have lost five of their last six games. Penn-Trafford improves to 7-1 after the win as Senior Zach Rocco scored 32 points for the Warriors.

Connellsville defeated Washington High by a score of 60-53. Connellsville had three players that combined for 43 points in the game.

Seniors Jordane Adams and Joey Koroly continue to lead the way for Trinity as they defeated Albert Gallatin by a score of 74-60. After only winning 7 games last season, this year, in the month of December, they have already 6 wins. Trinity is a different team this season, and I mean "different" in a better way.

Moon won their second game of the season as they defeated Brashear by a score of 62-52. Senior Jimmy Hoover scored 20 points for Moon as Senior Cheron Collington scored 28 points for Brashear.

Jared Goldstrom and Brayden Reynolds are the top two leading scorers for Chartiers Valley as they defeated Brasher by a score of 74-39. Goldstrom scored 19 points while Reynolds scored 17 points. The Colts only gave up 14 points in the second half which is funny since the Colts were able to score 14 points in the fourth quarter itself. Chartiers Valley improves their overall record to 5-2.

Luke Cochran and Johnny Crise are becoming one of the best duos in the WPIAL as they defeated Montour by a score of 65-57. Cochran scored 21 points while Crise scored 17 points. Highlands improves their record to 7-1.

Thomas Jefferson barely defeated Seton LaSalle as the Jaguars won by a score of 63-61. The Rebels had four players that scored at least 10 points while Noah Pierce scored 17 points for the Jaguars.

South Allegheny defeated West Mifflin by a score of 55-33 as South Allegheny improved their overall record to 8-0. Antonio Epps scored 19 points for South Allegheny as he is able to make a name for himself on both the basketball team and in South Allegheny's football team.

Knoch defeated Kiski by a score of 62-42 as Knoch had four players that scored at least 11 points in the game.

Serra Catholic only last five games all of last season. So far, in the month of December, they have lost four games. They lost to Indiana by a score of 62-54. The game went into overtime as Indiana outscored Serra Catholic 10-2 in the period. You could say Serra Catholic is still adjusting with Jimmy Moon now gone from the team and playing college basketball at Seton Hill University. However, Serra Catholic's section record is 3-0; so, maybe they have a shot in making a deep run in the WPIAL playoffs.

Jackson Pruitt scored 17 points for Jeannette as they defeated Valley by a score of 50-38.

Isiah Warfield's Central Valley Warriors played the Aliquippa Quips today. Isiah's dad, Mike, is the head football coach at Aliquippa. Some of Mike's Aliquippa's players play on the basketball team too. The Quips defeated Central Valley by a score of 60-48.

Liam Buck scored 20 points for Ambridge in their 64-55 win over Ellwood City.

South Side Beaver defeated New Brighton by a score of 52-50. Trent Seik scored 20 points for South Side Beaver.

Avonworth smacked Brownsville by a score of 85-50. Andrew Gannon scored 30 points for the Antelopes. His brother, Patrick, played on the team last season and graduated from Avonworth last year.

Frank Stumpo might be making a statement to be on the 2019-20 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Boys Fab 5. He was named Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Male Athlete of the Week earlier in the month of December and continues to put up points. Today, he scored 32 points for Keystone Oaks as the Golden Eagles defeated Carrick by a score of 74-60. This win improves Keystone Oaks's record to 5-3.

Springdale improved their overall record to 8-0 after beating St. Joseph today by a score of 79-53. Demitri Fritch scored 29 points for Springdale.

California defeated West Greene by a score of 44-42. Ben Jackson, who was just named PIAA 1A Football Player of the Year, scored 13 points for West Greene.

Even though Laurel had 5 players that scored at least 10 points for the team, they lost today to Obama Academy by a score of 67-56. This was the first loss for Laurel on the season as their overall record is now 7-1.

Lincoln Park improved their overall record to 7-1 after defeating Butler by a score of 74-60. Butler is in 6A and Lincoln Park is in 3A. Yes, a 3A school has the ability to beat a 6A school. Tanner Mathos scored 20 points for Lincoln Park while Devin Carney scored 19 points for Butler. This was low-key a big win for Lincoln Park that should be talked about a lot.
