STUD ALERT: Kiski Area football player Brock Wilkins can do it all on the football field. From playing fullback to linebacker to long snapper, Brock has been a huge part for a Cavaliers team that has started the season at 5-0. In Week 4, the Cavaliers defeated West Allegheny 7-0 as Wilkins rushed for a 37-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. In the game, he recorded a total of 107 rushing yards on 16 carries.
Questions & Answers:
Last week, in the fourth quarter, you ran for the only touchdown in the game to beat West Allegheny. Tell me how you felt knowing that you scored the game-winning touchdown?
Brock Wilkins: At the time, we didn’t know it was the game-winning touchdown, and there was time on the clock left. So, we knew we had to get a stop on defense and that was our main worry as a team.
Your team is off to a 5-0 start. What do you think your team is doing right to start this hot?
BW: We focus on the now, we can’t think about past weeks when we have great competition every week. We hold each other accountable and always put the team first. Our coaching staff prepares us every week along with our scout team guys giving us a great look.
Your team starts conference play at North Hills on Friday. Without giving away any secrets, what do you feel that your team needs to do to secure the win and extend your team's winning streak to six?
BW: They are very well-coached and have very talented players. We have lost three straight matchups against them, so for us, it’s personal. We have to be able to stop Robert Dickerson, he’s a playmaker and a guy we will talk about all week going into Friday night.
What's it like playing for head coach Sam Albert?
BW: Coach Albert brings it every time he steps onto the field, and as a player you must bring it too. He forces you to be better and makes you want to play hard. He’s a players coach, when you play for him, you must play fast play aggressive and hit anything that moves in a different color. He’s an old-school coach, and I couldn’t be a bigger fan of that.
Now, that you're a senior at Kiski Area, the younger players on the team definitely look up to you. What type of leadership and culture would you say you are providing for the team.
BW: Just holding each other accountable and being there for one another. As a guy that’s older and a senior, I envy that they get to play high school football next year. We just try and make sure they understand that you need to appreciate every rep in practice and truly love the game because one day you're going to lose it and you don’t get to go back.
So, you play three different positions on the football field. What's that like for you?
BW: It is fun. I love to do anything I can to help this team, I wouldn’t want it any other way.
How has the recruiting process been like for you?
BW: The recruiting process has been an enjoyable one. Although I don’t have any offers, I need to appreciate this time in my life and realize how much fun it is.
What schools have been reaching out to you?
BW: I have talked to a lot of FCS schools and some MAC schools as well.
If you could go see one musician in concert, who would it be?
BW: A$AP Freg, I always listen to him before a game.
Which team do you wish you could play against that isn't on your regular season schedule?
BW: Armstrong, it’s a great rivalry game between two blue-collar schools who are very close in proximity. For me, I live in Armstrong county and when I go out to eat, I want to have those bragging rights.
Now, if you could choose one WPIAL football player from another school to play at Kiski Area, who would you choose?
BW: Devin Whitlock, he is a stud and he can do anything as he plays hard on both sides of the ball. He is a game changer and a fierce competitor. How couldn’t you want to call that guy a teammate?
What is something that people would be surprised to know about you?
BW: I can sneeze with my eyes open.
